I’ve had shishito peppers in the past on certain occasions but I had never made them until this year when I grew them in my garden.Â
And they grew amazing!
I have never had pepper plants that were so productive, so if you’re looking to grow something new in your garden plant shishitos.
How to Make Shishito Peppers
You’ll find yourself making this recipe all the time whether it be for a side dish or the perfect snack because it’s so quick and easy!
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups whole shishito peppers
- 1/8 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/8 cup yoshida’s sauce
- 2 TBSP. fresh garlic (minced)
Instructions:
- Add the peppers into a cast iron skillet with all of the ingredients.
- Then cook the shishito peppers in a skillet over medium high heat for 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the peppers are soft and blistered up.
- After they are done cooking serve them hot and enjoy!
Recipe notes:
You can also add the peppers and all of the ingredients into a ziplock bag to marinate for a few hours prior. Then when you are ready to make them empty them into a hot pan to cook.
I’ve cooked them after marinating for a few hours as well as doing it all right in the moment and they taste great either way.
When I harvest my peppers I like them best when they are smaller because the skin is softer but they are still delicious even when they are bigger. You may just find that you have to cook them a bit longer when the peppers are larger.
Why I Love This Shishito Pepper Recipe
This recipe is great because they taste amazing just how they are!
The soy sauce, yoshida’s, and garlic is the perfect combination of flavors so you don’t need an additional dipping sauce for more flavor.
The next great thing is that they are super mild. I have had a spicy one a couple times but I think it is only because my plants likely cross pollinated with my habanero peppers.
99% of shishito peppers have amazing flavor and very mild to no heat, which means the entire family will enjoy them!
Where to Find Shishito Peppers
If you don’t grow the peppers yourself you should be able to find them at many Asian markets, farmers markets or your local grocery store. But if not they have them on Amazon!
What Are Shishito Peppers
Shishito peppers are a popular Japanese pepper that is very common in East Asian cooking.
They are small and slender with bright green skin and they are very mild with a slightly sweet flavor.
You can eat them raw just like you could a bell pepper but they taste best when they are cooked.
