One of my favorite memories as a kid was going to our local Christmas parade with my aunt and uncles and drinking hot cocoa!
If you got to the parade early enough you could back your truck up on a side street once the streets were blocked and have a front row view of the parade from the bed of the truck. It was the best!
So each year that is what my uncles would do. They’d both back up their trucks side by side and all of us (friends, cousins, and family) would pile in the bed of the trucks and watch the parade from the best view!
And what made the night even better was the hot cocoa we’d put in a thermos beforehand! It would warm you up and it made the entire night even more magical. It was our real life Hallmark Christmas movie!
So now let’s get to the recipe!
How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate
This is one of the most simple recipes to make on a cold winter day and it’s so much better than a packet. It’s rich, creamy, chocolate-y deliciousness in a mug!

Ingredients Needed
- Sugar – This gives the sweetness needed. Feel free to add more or less if desired.
- Cocoa Powder – This gives the recipe the cocoa / chocolate flavor needed. You can substitute for Dutch Cocoa Powder for an even better result!
- Milk Chocolate Chips – Adding real chocolate chips creates a rich and creamy chocolate taste, plus some extra sweetness! Swap out for dark chocolate or semi-sweet chips if you prefer less sweetness.
- Vanilla – The secret ingredient to all good recipes!
- Milk – I use whole milk for creamier hot cocoa but feel free to substitute with milk of your choice.

Steps
Heat your milk, sugar, and cocoa powder on the stove over medium heat and whisk until well combined.
Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a simmer, then add in your vanilla and chocolate chips and stir until the chocolate is melted.
Serve immediately into a mug and top with whipped cream or marshmallows!
How to Make Spiked Hot Cocoa
If you’d like to make an adult version of this recipe you can easily add a couple ingredients that will make this a hit at your next holiday party!
Simply fill your mug 2/3 full with the homemade hot cocoa. Then add 1 1/2 ounces of Peppermint Schnapps add 3/4 of an ounce of Chocolate Liqueur (we love Mozart Dark Chocolate)! Then stir, top with whipped cream and enjoy!
